Just the FAQs, ma'am

by Jeffrey L. Woods, President/CEO

Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions on our technical support lines.

Q: When using the VT-100 terminal emulation in Telix for Windows, the arrow keys don't operate the way they should. Why?

A: Each Phonebook entry may have an associated keyboard table in the "Expert" settings. Versions prior to 1.01d would ignore a setting of "None" here and load a default table anyway. Current versions will not load a keyboard table (a .KBD file) if a phonebook entry or terminal device is set to "None", which will give the appearance of the arrow keys being broken. To correct this, select a keyboard definition file other than "None" (such as VT102) for the expert settings in the Phonebook, and in the terminal device configuration.

Q: What is the init string for my modem? It isn't listed in TFW?

A: Modems are updated and released every week. We try to keep up with them all but often our best source of data on a modem is not the modem vendor, but you! If you'd like to see a modem added to the list, fax or mail a copy of the modem's quick reference card to us along with exact model information. Our address is on the inside cover (What inside cover? This is a web thing now. How about if you go to the deltaComm Contact Page.) Until then, the "Modem Sniffer" new to TFW 1.10 should set your init string properly. It may identify your modem as "Generic" or "Rockwell Chipset", and might occasionally misidentify a modem as something else, such as thinking your Boca is a Zoom; this is ok. TFW identifies the basic chipset if it cannot identify an embedded brand name, and uses the closest match.

Q: Is there a HostPlus for Windows?

A: At this time, there is not. We have delayed re-writing HostPlus for Windows until a more fully featured scripting language is completed for TFW, which will allow us to make HostPlus much more powerful. Until then, Steve Wood makes a very good TFW compatible host mode called Executive Host for Windows, which is available for download from deltaComm Online as EHW101.ZIP as of this writing.

Q: In Telix for DOS, I used to be able to pass a script on the DOS command line. How do I do this in TFW?

A: You can either create an icon for a commonly run script, set the same "/Sscript" parameter in the "Parameters" section of the icon properties, or run the script directly from Windows' "File | Run" menu, supplying the /Sscript parameter in the same manner.

Q: How do you pronounce the acronym "TFW" and the product name "Telix"?

A: Telix is pronounced by its creators as "TELL-licks". [ED: I leave that third 'l' out.] Many European users pronounce it as rhyming with "Felix" or "Helix"; while not technically correct, we'll know what you're talking about if you ask us where you can get an update for "TEE-licks". TFW the acronym for "Telix for Windows", is often pronounced as "TUFF-wah" [ED: I say "T'F w' ", no real vowels.]

Employee Spotlight

Jeff Byers

Range

As deltaComm's sales manager and longest-standing employee, Jeff "Range" Byers is ultimately responsible for customer satisfaction. His efforts have sped the order process into record time, so that orders placed on Wednesday can often be received on Friday. Range is also in charge of our technical support staff and wears numerous hats as needed - a real "hands on" type of person who won't let a customer leave unhappy.

Range joined deltaComm shortly following the Exis takeover, in December 1992, and quickly worked his way through the ranks to his current position. It is his dedication to your satisfaction that makes him such a valuable asset to us and to you. You can read more about Range (including how his name came to be) on his personal WWW page at http://www.telix.com/range/welcome.htm.

Richard Ward

Richard

The newest addition to deltaComm's programming staff comes to us by way of the south. Richard Ward adds a great deal of communications depth to our already-talented programming team. Richard was a member of the team that added fax capabilities to another comm program, and most recently has been working as a developer on the WorldGroup BBS by Galacticomm, Inc.

Richard and his wife, both native North Carolinians, have wanted to return to their roots, and think they've found the perfect match in deltaComm. Frankly, we think so, too. Welcome aboard, Richard!
